Né en Angleterre en 1945, Errol Girdlestone étudie la musicologie à l’Université d’Oxford. Souhaitant au départ devenir organiste, il obtient un diplôme, suivant la tradition chorale anglaise consacrée, qui ouvre ces portes. Il obtient une bourse du British Council pour étudier la direction d’orchestre à Varsovie, ce qui élargit encore son horizon.
Puis, cinq années de chant professionnel à Londres confirment son goût profond pour la voix, qui l’amènera finalement à l’opéra. Il est chanteur professionnel dans les ensembles vocaux les plus importants de Londres : le Monteverdi Choir, Cantores in Ecclesia, et le Hilliard Ensemble, mondialement reconnu, dont il est cofondateur. Il est toujours adepte d’un répertoire varié, chantant en concert avec le Pink Floyd, interprétant de la musique expérimentale à Londres avec les compositeurs d’avant-garde : Cornelius Cardew et David Bedford, ou Monteverdi et Bach avec John Eliot Gardiner et Roger Norrington.
Une période comme répétiteur à l’English National Opera ranime son intérêt pour la direction d’orchestre. Il devient assistant du chef wagnérien Reginald Goodall. Il participe à l’enregistrement EMI de la Tétralogie. Il passe quatre ans en Afrique du Sud à l’Opéra de Cape Town, où il dirige plusieurs opéras. Il élargit son répertoire symphonique. Dès son retour en Europe il dirige à l’English National Opera Cosi fan tutte. Il participe à une production de Parsifal à Oslo, partagée avec l’Opéra de Nice, ce qui l’amène sur la Côte d’Azur.
De 1995 à 2010 il est directeur musical et artistique de Syrinx Concerts Vence et de ses phalanges : l’Orchestre des Concerts Syrinx, l’Ensemble Vocal Syrinx, et sa contrepartie professionnelle : Cantores in Vencia. Une diversité de goûts personnels apparaît dans les programmations éclectiques de Syrinx Concerts, allant de Josquin des Prés, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, à travers Schumann, Mendelssohn et Sibelius, jusqu’à John Adams et Arvo Pärt. Indépendamment il dirige des opéras dans la région de Nice et Monte-Carlo : tels Madame Butterfly, la Petite Renarde rusée, la Traviata, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica, le barbier de Séville, la Flûte Enchantée.
Il dirige également plusieurs oratorios : la Passion selon Saint Matthieu de Bach, la Création, Nelsonmesse et Harmoniemesse de Haydn, la Grande Messe en ut mineur de Mozart, l’Enfance du Christ de Berlioz, le Requiem de Duruflé et Dixit Dominus de Handel.
Ailleurs en France, il dirige, lors de festivals d’été, notamment à Montpellier : festival Georges Auric, dans le Var : Musique Cordiale, dans le Loir et Cher : festival de Pontlevoy.
Il poursuit également une carrière internationale de chef d’orchestre et de chef de chœur, dans des opéras, à Aix, Londres, Cologne, Chicago. A Leipzig il dirige le Requiem Allemand de Brahms, à Chicago Semele de Handel et au festival de Canterbury la Messe en si de Bach.
Depuis 2006 il est régulièrement chef invité par le WCV - Wiener Concert-Verein - l’orchestre de chambre issu du Wiener Symphoniker, à Vienne, Bregenz, Gstaad et en France pour diriger de multiples programmes, comprenant plusieurs créations de compositeurs autrichiens et anglais. Dans un répertoire plus conventionnel il a dirigé deux fois le Wiener Concert-Verein au festival Yehudi Menuhin à Gstaad en 2010 avec des solistes de grand renom : Giuliano Carmignola et Alison Balsom.
Lorsque ses multiples activités lui en laissent le loisir, il s’adonne à la composition. Plusieurs de ses œuvres ont été données, avec succès, dans la région niçoise : Rivers of Time, Toccata pour piano et orchestre (créée par François-René Duchâble) et Pièce de Concert : concerto pour deux flûtes et orchestre. Ce dernier a été produit aux Invalides, à Paris, en novembre 2010 avec le flûtiste Jean Ferrandis. Plusieurs œuvres symphoniques sont à son nom. Il écrit également pour chœur, et ses arrangements sont souvent inclus dans la programmation de l’Ensemble Vocal Syrinx.
Errol s'est retiré après 20 ans à la tête de l'Ensemble Vocal Syrinx en mars 2013, non pas pour profiter à une retraite bien mèritée, mais à la poursuite de nouvelles aventures musicales !

Born in England, Errol Girdlestone studied music at Oxford University, after which he received a British Council grant to study conducting in Warsaw.
He began his professional musical career as a singer however, in some of the most prestigious vocal ensembles in London: the Monteverdi Choir, Cantores in Ecclesia, and in particular with the Hilliard Ensemble, of which he was a founder member.
After a period working as a répétiteur at the English National Opera, he spent four years in South Africa with the Cape Town Opera where he conducted a number of operas and began to build up a symphonic repertoire. Upon his return to England, he conducted at the English National Opera (Cosi fan tutte) and worked on contract at the Amsterdam, Oslo and Nice Opera companies.
For some years he has been resident in France, where he divides his time equally between opera, symphonic, and choral conducting
From 1995 to 2010 he was the permanent conductor and artistic director of the Orchestre des Concerts Syrinx, the Ensemble Vocal Syrinx, and its professional counterpart Cantores in Vencia, all of whom performed in the south of France, and were reputed for exemplary artistic standards and enterprising programmes, ranging from Josquin des Prés, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, through Schumann, Mendelssohn and Sibelius, to John Adams and Arvo Pärt.
He also guest-conducts operas regularly in the region of Nice and Monte Carlo: recent seasons have included Madama Butterfly, The cunning little vixen, La Traviata, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Die Zauberflöte. Locally conducted oratorios have included Bach St. Matthew Passion and B minor Mass, Haydn Schöpfung, Mozart C minor Mass K427, Berlioz l'Enfance du Christ, Haydn Nelson and Harmoniemessen, Duruflé Requiem, Larsson Förklädd Gud, Handel Dixit Dominus and Messiah.
Elsewhere in France he conducts at summer festivals, including the Georges Auric festival of contemporary music at Montpellier, Musique Cordiale in Provence, and the festival of Pontlevoy in the Loire.
He travels abroad, conducting in Germany, Austria, the USA, and England. Engagements have taken him to conduct Brahms German Requiem in Leipzig, Semele by Handel in Chicago and Bach B Minor Mass at the Canterbury Festival in England.
Since 2006 he has appeared regularly as guest conductor with the Wiener Concert-Verein, chamber orchestra of the Vienna Symphony. Recent concerts with them have included the Bregenz festival and appearances in the Musikverein in Vienna. His association with the Wiener Concert-Verein continued in 2010, when he was invited to conduct them twice at the Yehudi Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, with soloists Giuliano Carmignola and Alison Balsom.
He is also a composer, and has written several symphonic and choral works. In the former category are works premiered by eminent French artists – for example the flautist Jean Ferrandis and the pianist François-René Duchâble, both of whom are regular collaborators. His Pièce de concert, a concerto for two flutes and orchestra, was premiered to public acclaim at Les Invalides, Paris in November 2010.
Errol stepped down after 20 years as artistic director of the Ensemble Vocal Syrinx in March 2013, not to enjoy well-eared retirement, but to pursue yet new musical adventures!
